Rock Creek to Hilton ski tour is an introductory 1-day backcountry ski that is ideal for those new to backcountry ski touring. It requires a vehicle shuttle, but features a nice, long descent and very little avalanche danger.

Description

Want to see perfect first backcountry ski tour? Then this is it.

This tour gives you the opportunity to be out in the big mountains with spectacular scenery feeling a long way from the road. The approach is easy and much of the skiing is lower angle. When it is steeper, the slopes are wide open allowing big wide slow turns. There is some tree skiing so you need to be able to control the speed via wedging. Ability to carve perfect parallel turns is not required.

Avalanche danger can by and large be avoided. This tour requires a vehicle shuttle with one vehicle left on the Highway 395 frontage road to pick up the party and the end of the tour and to retrieve you shuttle vehicle from the end of the plowed road in rock Creek Canyon.

This PDF is 6 pages long. It includes a map with the line of the route, a description of the route with some photographs, several waypoints to hit and suggestions on how to play the day.

Also included is a GPX track. Use this to help find you way but do not be a slave to the “blue dot.” The GPX track is not an exact route to follow and doing so might get you into trouble in variable snow conditions. It is simply there to help you ensure you are in the right neighborhood. Look up and around and develop your navigational skills.
