The Mini Morrison Loop Ski tour is a fine intermediate ski tour with one short section requiring avalanche evaluation but overall moderate angled ski slopes. It is readily accomplished in a short winter’s day or with an early afternoon finish in spring corn conditions. Spectacular high mountain scenery a short distance from the car and from one of the areas best restaurants.

Description

On this tour you drop below the ominous, hulking north face of Mt. Morrison with its crumbling pillars of limestone and shale. Look up at this and imagine you are below the Eiger of Switzerland. Then look the other way over desert and distant blue ranges. No mistaking it, you are in the Eastern Sierra.

The tour is short enough that you don’t need a crack-of-dawn start. This is an intermediate-level ski with a short section of avalanche terrain should can be evaluated. There is always the option to return the way you came if you don’t like it. and you’ll still get some good skiing in. The shaded north facing bowl you descend from Morrison Col holds good powder snow long after the storm ends. Overall the tour has  moderate riding slopes with the option of adding some more vertical in by taking a side trip up Old Man Bowl if you choose.

And it ends near one of the best bars and restaurants on the Eastside. What more could you need?

This PDF is 7 pages long. It includes a map with the line of the route, a description of the route with some photographs, several waypoints to hit and suggestions on how to play the day.

Also included is a GPX track. Use this to help find you way but do not be a slave to the “blue dot”. The GPX track is not an exact route to follow and doing so might get you into trouble in variable snow conditions. It is simply there to help you ensure you are in the right neighborhood. Look up and around and develop your navigational skills.
